ChildFund, MasterCard Foundation, AMREF & Ministry of Health Launch E‑Learning to Bridge the Nursing Gap

August 10, 2015

Zambia faces a critical shortage of trained health workers—just one nurse for every 1,500 people, compared to the World Health Organization’s recommended ratio of 1 to 700—because nursing schools simply can’t keep up with demand.

To close that gap, ChildFund International, with funding from The MasterCard Foundation and in collaboration with AMREF, launched the $7.6 million Zambia Nurse and Life Skills Training Program. Through this innovative e‑learning initiative, over 6,600 young Zambians, including 6,000 core nursing trainees, gained the skills to become nurses and midwives while also expanding the capacity of nursing schools nationwide.

In 2024, ChildFund Zambia allocated 83% of its total operating expenses to programs supporting vulnerable children, families, and communities.
