Meet Robby a thriving farmer and entrepreneur in rural Chibombo
November 10, 2025
There was a time when 24 year old Robby walked over 10 kilometres to school barefoot every day.
Growing up in Chibombo District, life was not easy. Raised in an extended family where resources were stretched thin, even necessities like shoes, books, and a school uniform were out of reach.
“I remember going to school without proper shoes or books,” Robby recalls. “It was hard, but I wanted to learn.”
Despite these challenges, Robby’s determination never wavered. His turning point came when he was enrolled in ChildFund’s sponsorship programme; a moment that would change the course of his life.
“ChildFund came in when we were really struggling,” he says. “That support is what helped me finish school.”
Through sponsorship, Robby gained access to essential school supplies, clothing, and personal items, allowing him to stay in school and focus on his education. But the impact went far beyond the classroom.
After completing Grade 12, Robby continued his journey with ChildFund through youth development programs. He participated in trainings on smart agriculture, entrepreneurship, and peer education; experiences that helped him discover both his passion and his potential.
“The smart agriculture training opened my eyes,” Robby explains. “It showed me that I could use better methods to grow food and earn something from it.”
Starting small, Robby began applying what he had learned. With determination and careful reinvestment, he grew his farming activities, purchasing seeds, fertilisers, and other inputs to expand his production.
Today, Robby is a successful agriculturist and entrepreneur. He runs his own agro shop, supplying farming inputs and offering consultancy services to local farmers. Through his work, he is not only improving agricultural productivity in his community but also inspiring other young people to pursue sustainable livelihoods.
“ChildFund really changed my life. I doubt I would be a farmer with an eye for business if they hadn’t supported me,” he says with a smile. “I love what I do, and I also get to teach other upcoming farmers. They get motivated.”

Robby has become a role model in his community, a trusted voice that parents turn to for guidance and mentorship for their children.
“I grew up as a reference point,” he shares. “Many parents call me to counsel their children to stay focused. I always tell them to stay disciplined, because this support is an opportunity to change your life.”
Reflecting on his journey, Robby speaks with pride and gratitude:
“I’m proof of what ChildFund can do. They helped me grow. I hope they continue supporting children because it changes lives.”
“ChildFund made me who I am. I was proud to be a sponsored child, and I am forever grateful to my sponsor for helping me achieve my dream. I will continue to mentor other young people that have interest in agriculture.”
In 2025, ChildFund’s youth programmes have supported over 200,000 young people across 21 districts in Zambia, equipping them with skills in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and leadership. This investment continues to create pathways for youth to transition from vulnerability to opportunity, contributing to stronger and more resilient communities.
